Since its inception, the Share Our Selves (SOS) Adopt A Family Program has been connecting caring community members who provide gifts and food to struggling Orange County families during the holidays. This year marks the 41st year of the SOS Adopt A Family program, serving more than 1,180 families with children this season.
The Adopt A Family program is just one of the ways SOS assists the community, having been established to provide for the most serious concerns of the poor residing in Orange County -- food, clothing and emergency financial aid for housing, transportation, prescriptions and children.
Without the Adopt A Family program providing tangible gifts for those in need, impoverished local families would face a bleak Christmas. The program is especially important this year for Orange County families who find themselves struggling in the midst of a tough economy.
In light of this need, adopting families in crisis has become an important Christmas tradition for the staff at the Bisnar Chase Personal Injury Attorneys, who are California personal injury attorneys. Prior to implementing the official SOS Adopt A Family Program at its firm, staff members at Bisnar Chase Personal Injury Attorneys have been adopting local families at Christmas for sixteen years.
"When Christmas rolls around, that means an all-out, present-wrapping-pizza-party at our office for the staff," said Shannon Barker, legal administrator and office manager at Bisnar Chase Personal Injury Attorneys who says the firm's staff members come together, usually a week or two before Christmas, to wrap presents for the families they adopt. "This is something we've been doing for as long as I can remember and it's a tradition we look forward to every year."
How the Adopt-A-Family Program Works
Once needy families are identified and recommended by Costa Mesa and Santa Ana schools, donors sign up and agree to provide at least two new gifts for every child and food or grocery gift cards for a complete dinner for a family, or provide at least two new gifts for each child in a family.
Donors can also choose to bring extra toys, gifts or food (or provide monetary donations, financial assistance or volunteer services) to the SOS donation center several weeks before Christmas.
Companies, schools, and religious institutions can be donors. When it comes to families that don't get adopted, donors are asked to consider adopting multiple families or holding food and toy drives to assist SOS and its efforts.
Elizabeth Evans of SOS says, "These gifts will be distributed to SOS clients from now until Christmas. The Adopt A Family Program is a true volunteer effort and SOS is extremely grateful to all those who donate their time and resources to make the holiday season brighter for those in our community who are struggling."
Bisnar Chase Personal Injury Attorneys Donates Toys, Food, Clothing to Local OC Families
John Bisnar, founder of Bisnar Chase Personal Injury Attorneys, enthusiastically states, "The Adopt A Family program is a gift to my staff and family. It gives us an opportunity to anonymously provide a wonderful Christmas to families who might otherwise have little or nothing on Christmas day. The Adopt A Family program is for those who are struggling during the holidays.
"Each year, we choose two to three families so that our entire staff can be involved in the gift giving. I know the families we help are very appreciative. However, my staff gets so much joy out of purchasing the gifts, wrapping them and sending them off that our involvement is one of the highlights of our holidays. We are all very fortunate to be on the giving end."
Bisnar says some of this year's gifts include bikes, electronics, board games, shoes, clothing and gift cards for the parents to purchase food and household items.
Danielle Olsen, executive assistant at Bisnar Chase Personal Injury Attorneys and mother of four, says she couldn't imagine not helping needy families during the holidays.
"Personally, I couldn't imagine a child not having a Christmas. I wish we could adopt more families, but for now, two is the perfect number because there's more than just one present waiting for each child under the tree."
