Why is Xarelto Dangerous?

Xarelto (generic name rivaroxaban) is manufactured by Bayer, but marketed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, which is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Xarelto is prescription blood thinner, which has been marketed as a drug that is more convenient, safer and more effective than older blood thinners such as Warfarin. Manufacturers claimed the advantage with Xarelto compared with other blood thinners such as Warfarin is that it doesn't need monthly monitoring for increased risk of bleeding.

They said the anticoagulant, which prevents blood clots and embolisms, would give patients more convenience by not requiring frequent trips to the doctor's office for monitoring. However, in the event of major internal bleeding or hemorrhaging, there is no antidote for Xarelto, which means there is no way to stop the bleeding in patients who suffered injuries or needed emergency surgery. This could prove fatal for patients.

Xarelto Side Effects

Like other blood thinning drugs, the most dangerous Xarelto side effect is hemorrhaging that is uncontrolled. Xarelto patients who suffer a serious bleeding event may have trouble getting their blood to clot because the effects of this drug last anywhere between eight and 12 hours. A patient may suffer brain bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding or even a stroke as a result of taking Xarelto. The U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) also reported that during the first quarter of 2012, blood clots accounted for nearly half of Xarelto side effects.

Here are some of the significant risk factors that could lead to potentially fatal Xarelto side effects:

• Risk of Bleeding: There is no antidote yet for the drug and the bleeding cannot be stopped.
• Prosthetic Heart Valves: The FDA warns that Xarelto should not be prescribed to patients with prosthetic heart valves because its safety and efficacy was not studied with such patients.
• Low Platelet Count: Xarelto should not be prescribed for patients with low platelet counts. Platelets allow the blood to clot. When there are not enough platelets in the blood, uncontrollable bleeding could occur.
• Spinal Cord Bleeding: If a patient is to be treated with spinal anesthesia such as an epidural, the FDA warns against Xarelto use.

Some of the other serious adverse side effects that have been reported as a result of Xarelto use include liver damage, gastrointestinal bleeding, blood clot in the lungs and bleeding in the brain.

Studies Pointing to Xarelto Dangers

Since the FDA approved Xarelto for use, there have been a number of studies, which question the safety and effectiveness of this drug. In September 2011, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study comparing Xarelto to Warfarin in patients suffering from atrial fibrillation. This study concluded that there were no significant differences between the two drugs when it came to the risk of a serious bleeding event.

An FDA advisory panel voted against approving this drug to treat patients with acute coronary syndrome in 2012. In the first quarter of 2012, the FDA reported receiving hundreds of adverse event reports relating to Xarelto including those that caused serious, disabling or fatal injury. Another study in February 2013 in the New England Journal of Medicine also concluded that Xarelto might pose an increased risk of bleeding in patients who take them.
