Women in the UK Unite to Stop of the Use of Vaginal Mesh Devices
Women in the United Kingdom have united to stop potentially dangerous vaginal mesh surgical procedures from being offered at clinics and hospitals, according to a news report in Science Times. This is a procedure that has caused thousands of women chronic pain and a range of other health complications, leaving many disabled and in need of multiple surgeries. Transvaginal mesh is used in women who are experiencing pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence after giving birth. Nearly 8,000 British women claim the device has wreaked havoc on their lives.
Severe Complications Reported
The mesh procedure itself reportedly costs less than $1,250. It is done as an outpatient procedure. But many women around the world, including here in the United States, have complained about numerous complications. A majority of the complaints say that the material used in the vaginal mesh disintegrated inside the bodies of victims, cutting into the soft tissue it was meant to hold in place.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received thousands of reports about complications from transvaginal mesh implants. In 2019, the agency ordered manufacturers of surgical mesh to stop selling all devices. In many cases, women have experienced chronic and painful infections because of the mesh becoming embedded deep into their reproductive organs.
Some claim that even after getting the mesh removed from their bodies, sometimes with multiple surgeries, they still feel pain because of nerve damage. Some have been unable to work or earn a livelihood. Other women have reported being confined to wheelchairs and being unable to walk because of complications. The mesh has also destroyed marriages after several women said they could not have sexual intercourse any more without experiencing severe pain and discomfort.
