VW and Porsche Cars Recalled for Software Issue Affecting Seatbelts and Airbags
Volkswagen and Porsche are recalling more than 227,000 of their vehicles for a problem with the software that could cause the seatbelts and airbags to malfunction. According to news reports, Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority has found problems with a control unit that could lead to limited functioning of the airbag and the seatbelt tensioner.
Details of the Recall
Volkswagen confirmed to The Drive that a defective capacitor in the airbag control module might render the airbags inoperative. In rare cases, these airbags may deploy unexpectedly. SG is reporting three cases where the unit malfunctioned, but no injuries or collisions have been reported as a result of these unintended activations. Affected
Volkswagen models include Tiguans, CCs, and Sharans built in 2015 totaling about 203,400 vehicles. Porsche Boxters, Caymans, 911s and Panameras built in 2015 and 2016 are also affected, albeit in smaller numbers – about 23,550 cars. About 56,000 of these vehicles are located in Germany, but the remaining vehicles were sold abroad, most of them in the United States.
The automaker is advising owners of these recalled vehicles who see their airbag warning lights come on to bring their cars in for expedited service. Regardless of whether a light comes on, Volkswagen suggests that owners of affected vehicles bring them in for inspection and if necessary, for service.
