Video Shows Car That Flew Up and Became Wedged in Second Floor of Santa Ana Building
A surveillance camera on an Orange County Transportation Authority bus caught the moment the morning of Jan. 14 when a car became airborne, punched a hole in the second floor of a Santa Ana dental office and became wedged there, The Orange County Register reports. The bizarre image and video of the Nissan Altima getting stuck so high up in a building went viral and made national headlines over the last couple of days. Of course, it was also trending on social media.
The crash occurred early morning on Jan. 14 in the 300 block of 17th Street when the Nissan Altima hit a raised median while traveling at a high speed. Those in the vehicle received medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle admitted to being under the influence of narcotics, Santa Ana police said. The incident was also captured by a nearby motel’s surveillance camera. In the OCTA bus video, the Nissan appears to narrowly miss hitting the bus that was traveling along 17th Street.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured passengers in the Nissan Altima. We are also relieved that no one was in the building at the time and that no pedestrians or bystanders were injured as a result of this crash.
Driving Under the Influence of Drugs
While the manner in which this crash occurred was freakish and bizarre, it’s not surprising that a driver who was admittedly under the influence of drugs and was speeding lost control of his vehicle and crashed. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a), it is illegal to operate a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs – be it recreational or prescription drugs. It is particularly important to note that even though recreational marijuana became legal in California on Jan. 1, 2018, driving under the influence of pot is still very much against the law.
Justice for Victims
Whether you are a passenger in a vehicle driven by a drugged driver or have otherwise been injured by such a driver, you may be able to seek compensation from the at-fault driver for injuries, damages and losses you have sustained. Injured victims of DUI drivers can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, pain and suffering and emotional distress. An experienced Santa Ana personal injury lawyer will be able to advise injured victims and their families regarding their legal rights and options.
