Subaru Recalls 2.3 Million Vehicles Over Brake Light Problem

Subaru Corporation has issued a vehicle defect recall for about 2.3 million vehicles worldwide over a brake light problem in what would be the automaker’s biggest ever recall. According to a report on Autonews.com, Subaru is recalling nearly 2 million of its popular Impreza and Forester models in the United States, its biggest market. The Wall Street Journal reported that Subaru traced the malfunction to certain chemicals used in everyday products such as perfumes and fabric softeners.

Problems Abound for Subaru

The chemicals could create an insulating barrier on certain switches that prevent a proper flow of electricity through components. Vehicles affected by this recall were manufactured from 2008 to 2017. The recall covers certain 2014 to 2016 Forester, 2008 through 2016 Impreza and 2013 through 2017 Crosstrek vehicles. If all the affected units are recalled, it would be the automaker’s biggest in terms of the affected units excluding the ongoing Takata airbag recall. Subaru has been affected by a number of quality control issues since late 2017 ranging from faulty components to inspections.

In January, Subaru stopped production at its only car factory in Japan for two weeks after a defect in a power steering component was detected. Late last year, the automaker announced a worldwide recall of its boxer engines over an issue with valve springs. Subaru has also launched a series of domestic recalls for re-inspections after it admitted to cheating on testing processes.
