Smart Cars Recalled For Steering Problems

Mercedes Benz has issued an auto defect recall for certain 2014-2015 model year SmartForTwo minicars to fix a problem, which could result in a broken steering gear, increasing the risk of a crash.

According to documentation submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the fault lies with the steering gear bolts on the front crossmember of the affected cars built on the previous-generation Smart 451 platform.

Increased Risk of a Crash

Mercedes-Benz officials say a certain batch of bolts used between January 28, 2014 and July 21, 2014, might not meet the endurance requirements specified in its original design for the vehicles.

After a careful analysis, the automaker has determined that the affected bolts were part of a batch provided to it by an outside manufacturer and were not made in-house.

The bolts in the affected vehicle are at risk of breaking during the lifetime of the vehicle, especially if exposed to high loads in combination with vibrations.

This could increase the risk of an accident or collision. In extreme cases, affected cars may suffer from broken mounting bolts on the steering mechanism.

The recall will involve replacing all of the steering gear bolts on affected vehicles with new bolts that are within Mercedes-Benz’s original product specifications.

As with any other recall, the repairs will be done at no cost to vehicle owners.
