Salmonella Outbreak in 12 States Linked to Tainted Papayas
Salmonella-tainted yellow Maradol papayas have been blamed in a nationwide outbreak that has sickened 47 people across 12 states, including one death. According to a KTLA news report, 12 people have been hospitalized as a result of these fruits. Investigators with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are working to find out where the contamination occurred in the supply chain.
Details of the Outbreak
Among those who reported the illness, symptoms began between May 17 and June 28. Illnesses that were reported after June 23 may not be included in this number as there can be a delay between when someone becomes sick and when the illness is reported. The ages of those who became ill as a result of this salmonella outbreak range from 1 to 95.
The CDC has recommended that consumers stay away from this particular type of papaya and that restaurants or stores refrain from serving or selling them. CDC is advising that consumers ask the place of purchase if the papaya is a yellow Maradol papaya, if they aren’t sure about it. When it doubt, officials say, consumers should throw the fruit out. Samples collected from sickened individuals and from an unnamed grocery store tested positive for two different strains of salmonella.
Dangers of Salmonella Infections
The CDC reports that there are about 1.2 million cases of salmonella infections in the United States each year with 450 deaths. The symptoms of salmonella infections usually develop anywhere between 12 and 72 hours after the person consumes the food. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramping. This could last between four and seven days. Although a number of individuals recover without any treatment, some who develop severe diarrhea may need to be hospitalized. Those who are very young, old or those who have compromised immune systems are most at risk for complications and severe cases of illness.
If You have Been Sickened
If you or a loved one has become ill as a result of consuming contaminated food, it is important that you obtain prompt medical care and treatment. Isolate the food, which you believe caused your illness so it can be examined in an independent laboratory for the presence of pathogens. Report your illness to the local healthcare agency, which tracks such outbreaks. Contact an experienced food poisoning lawyer who will help you seek and obtain compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization and pain and suffering.
