Regulators Warn Hoverboard Dangers Still Lurk Despite Recall

Earlier this month, there was a widespread recall of hoverboards in the U.S. According to a news report on Mashable.com, despite the recall, the hoverboard nightmare is not over just yet. Regulators say that even though nearly half a million hoverboards from popular brands such as Swagway and Razor were recalled, there are still many potentially dangerous hoverboards in homes across the U.S. Regulators are warning consumers to stop using these hoverboards right away and check the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website (cpsc.gov) for the hoverboard recall list.

Hoverboard Fires and Explosions

CPSC officials reemphasize that all of the hoverboard models that are recalled were made with fundamental design flaws that put people in danger of serious injury. Officials have also said that consumers should only buy UL-certified devices with safe batteries. But several regulators are now recommending that a stability standard should also be put in place for hoverboards because of the 7,200 or so injuries associated with falls from the devices.

The hoverboard fires were caused by defective or poorly-made lithium ion batteries and battery chargers. Although our laptops and cell phones are also powered by lithium ion batteries, the bar is much higher on these products when it comes to battery quality. However, with hoverboards, there has been little or no quality control. There have been instances of hoverboards exploding and catching fire while charging or even when they were in operation. Several injuries and significant property loss has been reported in these cases nationwide. Major U.S. airlines have banned hoverboards in both carry-on and check-in baggage because of the significant risks they pose.

Hoverboard Safety Tips

If you have a hoverboard at home that is part of a recall list, please return it to the point of purchase for a full refund. It is not worth taking a risk. If your hoverboard is not UL-certified, do not use it. Use only the original charger. Don’t use knock-offs. Never charge your hoverboard overnight.
