Onion Choppers Recalled for Laceration Hazards
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Mueller Austria are urging consumers to immediately stop using a select version of the company’s Onion Chopper Pro, which features a locking tab that must be pushed towards the blades in order to lock properly in place. According to a CPSC alert, the product’s locking tab can detach from the rest of the unit during use, causing hands and fingers to slide into the blades, posing a serious laceration hazard.
Details of the Recall
The recall includes about 72,000 units sold to consumers on Mueller Austria’s website muellerdirect.com and Amazon.com between September 2016 and December 2019 for about $20. Mueller Austria introduced a new chopper in December 2019 with a different locking tab configuration. This notice only applies to older versions of the onion chopper that features a locking tab that slides toward the blades.
Based in Oakland, California, Muller Austria is currently in the process of negotiating a joint recall with CPSC. The firm wants to take action in order to protect consumers and provide a remedy. However, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has posed challenges. Therefore, it is not clear when Mueller Austria will be able to provide a remedy for this issue. Consumers who have these appliances at home are urged to stop using them. Consumers are also advised to check for a future announcement of this recall on cpsc.gov. It is not clear if consumers reported suffering laceration injuries as a result of these defective products.
