Nissan Recalls 300000 Cars For Sudden Acceleration Issues
Nissan Motor Co. has issued a vehicle defect recall for nearly 300,000 cars in the United States because of unintended acceleration risks linked to a trim panel.
According to a Detroit News report, this recall was issued under a lot of government pressure even as safety regulators upgrade a new separate investigation into nearly one million Nissan vehicles.
Forcing a Recall
The Japanese automaker had resisted recalling nearly 300,000 2012-2015 Versa and Versa Note cars. Nissan officials say the right edge of a driver’s show may catch the edge of the lower trim panel. Initially, Nissan told NHTSA it did not believe this was a safety issue.
In its recall over the sudden acceleration, Nissan had said earlier it planned to address it with a service campaign.
In February, Nissan announced that it would make a design improvement to take care of the sudden acceleration issue by modifying the console trim panel. But NHTSA officials have pushed the automaker into issuing a full-fledged recall.
When the recall begins, dealers will modify the trim panel to fix the sudden or unintended acceleration issues.
What is Sudden Acceleration?
Sudden or unintended acceleration is the unexpected, uncontrolled acceleration of a vehicle often accompanied by the apparent loss of braking effectiveness. This is often caused by an inherent vehicle defect, usually mechanical, electrical or electronic.
There is little a driver can do when the vehicle accelerates out of control. In the past, Toyota has recalled millions of vehicles for sticky accelerator pedals and faulty floor mats that caused unintended acceleration and paid unprecedented fines to the government for failing to issue prompt recalls.
Injuries and Damages
Sudden and unintended acceleration can cause significant injuries and damages. Occupants of the vehicles can suffer catastrophic injuries or death. Others on the roadway are also in grave danger when a vehicle barrels out of control at a high rate of speed.
