Nissan Murano SUVs Recalled for Braking Problems
Nissan has issued a vehicle defect recall for about 86,265 Murano SUVs from the 2009 model year to address a faulty part in the antilock brake system or ABS. According to an article in Consumer Reports, if this particular part fails, the brake pedal may move closer to the floor than usual and more quickly than a driver might expect. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has said that even though the brakes are engaging in these vehicles, it might feel like they are not. Stopping distances may also increase because of the additional time it takes for the pedal to travel further to the floor.
Details of the Recall
NHTSA launched a probe in April 2018 into brake-related problems with the 2009 Nissan Murano, including allegations that 14 crashes and three non-life-threatening injuries were linked to these defects. The recalled vehicles were manufactured from July 9, 2007 through Aug. 29, 2009. Nissan has said the problem with these vehicles is that a zinc coating on an ABS component may react with brake fluids to create a gelatinous substance causing valves within the brake system to stick open.
As a result, extra fluid may collect within the brake system and cause additional brake-pedal travel. Drivers might experience the pedal moving quicker and further to the floor than they expect. When the recall begins, dealers will inspect the faulty part and replace it, if necessary, at no cost to vehicle owners. Nissan began notifying all potentially affected owners on Feb. 4. How do you find out if your vehicle has been recalled? The best way is to plug in your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website. If your vehicle has been recalled, it should appear on the website. It would be in your best interest to check back regularly to see if your vehicle is recalled.
If You Have Been Injured
If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of these or other auto defects, you may be able to seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, pain and suffering and emotional distress. An experienced auto defect attorney will remain on your side, fight for your rights and ensure that the negligent automakers and/or auto parts manufacturers are held accountable.
