Nissan And Mazda Recall Vehicles For Airbag Defects
after Toyota Motor Corporation announced a worldwide recall of 2.3 million cars to repair defective airbags that could rupture on deployment, three other Japanese automakers – Honda, Nissan and Mazda – have announced similar safety recalls.
Less than two weeksAccording to a news report in the International Business Times, the recalls involve airbags made by parts supplier Takata Corp.
Millions of Airbags Involved in Recall
Honda said about 2 million of its vehicles made between 2000 and 2005 need to be checked to ensure that airbags don’t overinflate on impact.
Honda warned last week that it was likely to announce another airbag-related recall. Nissan and Mazda joined Honda recalling more of their vehicles.
Nissan recalled 755,000 cars worldwide made between 2001 and 2003 while Mazda said 160,000 of its vehicles have the same problem. Toyota says its affected models include the Corolla compact sedan, the Corolla Matrix hatchback, the Yaris subcompact, the Camry midsized sedan and the Tundra pickup truck.
Honda says its latest recall includes the Fit subcompact, the Element crossover SUV and the CR-V crossover SUV. Nissan’s recall includes the Cube multi-purpose vehicle, the X-Trail crossover SUV and some Infiniti brand models.
Mazda’s recall includes the Mazda6 full-sized car and the Mazda RV-8.
Dangerous Vehicles
The airbags in the vehicles involved in these recalls apparently deploy with too much force causing shrapnel to be ejected into the vehicle compartment. This has resulted in serious injuries and even fatalities.
These recalls have also drawn attention to the fact that a number of automakers rely on the same supplier for key vehicle parts such as seatbelts and airbags.
It is crucial that consumers pay close attention to safety recalls. If your vehicle is part of a recall, it is important that you take the vehicle to an authorized dealer to perform the necessary repairs.
If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of a defective vehicle or part, you may be able to file a product liability claim against the manufacturer.
Injured victims can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, rehabilitation, pain and suffering and emotional distress.
An experienced auto defect lawyer will be able to advise victims and their families regarding their legal rights and options.
