Massive Product Defect Recall of Cuisinart Food Processor Blades
Cuisinart and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) are recalling about 8 million food processor blades in the U.S. after receiving reports from consumers about broken blade pieces in their processed foods. According to an ABC news report, Conair, the maker of Cuisinart food processors, got 69 reports of consumers finding broken pieces of a “riveted blade” in the food. This included 30 reports of mouth lacerations or tooth injuries. CPSC officials say they are extremely concerned about the possibility of serious injuries particularly during the holiday season when more people are cooking.
The blades in question have four rivets, are silver-colored stainless steel and have a beige plastic center hub. Only food processors with four rivets in the blades are included in this recall. The recall affects 22 models made in China that were sold between July 1996 and December 2015. These products were sold for between $100 and $350. The CPSC is encouraging anyone who may have purchased these defective food processors to stop using them and contact Cuisinart for a free replacement blade.
Dangerous and Defective Products
Based on this news report, it appears that the defective food processors caused serious injuries including lacerations to the mouth and broken teeth. These types of injuries could be disfiguring and costly to treat. Often, cosmetic surgery or treatment is not covered by medical insurance, which means victims must pay out of pocket. It is also curious why Cuisinart did not recall these dangerous and defective food processors earlier. It is also not clear for how long they’ve received these complaints or if they already knew that the blades were faulty.
Seeking Compensation
If you or a loved one has been injured by a defective product, you may be able to seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, cost of surgery, rehabilitation and pain and suffering. Given the size of this recall, consumers may also be able to join a class action lawsuit to get reimbursed for a faulty product. These types of actions will also deter product manufacturers from putting products in the market that are substandard and defective.
