Illegal Fireworks Display Causes Injuries and Destroys Apartments
An illegal fireworks display on July 4 injured five people and caused severe damage to several apartments. According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, a blaze broke out after a firework landed on a palm tree. The fire tore through eight apartment units, with five people suffering injuries. Three victims were taken to a hospital with injuries ranging from smoke inhalation to burns. At least one person attempted to jump from a balcony.
Fires Ignited by Illegal Fireworks
Los Angeles firefighters said they responded to 1,738 calls within a 24-hour period from 3 a.m. July 4 to 3 a.m. July 5. Firefighters across the region were busy dousing fires and police were inundated with 911 calls as people gathered to celebrated Independence Day. Private celebrations, including illegal firework displays, took place in lieu of the usual shows which were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Several fires were reported in different cities, including one in a San Dimas neighborhood.
Despite repeated attempts from law enforcement and fire agencies to the public to refrain from setting off illegal fireworks, displays in some Los Angeles and Orange County cities rivaled that of theme parks and professional shows. But they also put neighborhoods in grave danger. In Azusa, what appeared to be a row of tall trees were ablaze Saturday night. In San Bernardino, residents shared a video on Twitter of burning trees on the corner of Merito Avenue and Union Street. Several large trees and a car caught fire on Saturday night near residences in the area of San Marino Street and Normandie Avenue in Koreatown, which witnesses captured on video.
