Ikea Recalls Beach Chairs for Finger Entrapment and Fall Risk
Swedish retailer Ikea is issuing a mass product recall for all models of its MYSINGSO beach chair after getting complaints of collapse and injury. According to a report on Tech Times, five people have complained that they injured their fingers and required medical attention. Ikea officials said that incorrect assembly of the beach chair could lead to risks of falls or finger entrapments. In the five incident reports in which the beach chairs collapsed, it was due to incorrect re-assembly, the manufacturer said.
The company issued a statement saying that the beach chair has gone through “relevant mechanical fabric and chemical tests with approved result” before it was put in the market. But the company said it has done a full investigation and as a result, improved the design of the beach chair to further mitigate the risks posed by incorrect re-assembly and injuries. The updated version of the MYSINGSO beach chair is expected to go back on Ikea’s shelves beginning in February.
Ikea’s Past Recalls
Ikea recalled a number of products in 2016. The retailer issued a massive recall for 29 million dressers after tip-over incidents resulted in the deaths of three toddlers. Ikea ended up paying $50 million in damages to the victims’ families. Last June, Ikea recalled nearly three million child safety gates after parents complained that their locks were unreliable, causing children to fall down the stairs. Ikea has 340 stores around 28 countries across the world.
Product Liability Issues
Product manufacturers have a responsibility to produce items that are safe for consumers to use. When they fail to do so and the products cause injuries, consumers may be able to file a product liability lawsuit seeking compensation for the injuries, damages and losses they have sustained. Victims in such cases may also be able to file a class action lawsuit seeking damages. In cases where the injuries are not severe, a class action lawsuit is a good way to hold manufacturers of defective products accountable.
A product defect claim may involve a flaw that occurred during the manufacturing process. It may also involve a design flaw or a failure on the part of the manufacturer to warn consumers about the product’s inherent dangers. A product liability claim may be filed against a manufacturer, retailer, distributor or other parties. An experienced product defect attorney will be able to advise injured victims and their families regarding their legal rights and options.
