Hyland Baby Teething Tablets Recalled Due to Risk of Seizures
The Standard Homeopathic Company has issued a product defect recall of all lots Hyland’s Baby Teething Tablets and Baby Nighttime Teething Tablets because of a risk of extreme toxicity that can cause infants to have seizures. According to a report on Syracuse.com, all of these products have been recalled after inconsistent amounts of toxic belladonna alkaloids were found in the medicine.
Dangerous Ingredient
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says the amounts may differ, but that these products pose a serious health hazard due to belladonna’s unpredictable effects. FDA officials say there is no known safe dose or toxic dose of belladonna in children because there are just too many factors that affect the toxicity. Hyland’s teething tablets were marketed as providing temporary relief for teething symptoms in infants.
The company has said it will pull all remaining tablets from store shelves and that it stopped manufacturing these products in October 2016. The company has also said it is notifying its distributors and retailers by mail and is arranging for return of all recalled products. Anyone who has these teething tablets at home is asked to discard it immediately.
Severe Side Effects
The FDA reported receiving more than 400 reports of adverse affects in children relating to these teething tablets including seizures, shortness of breath and tremors within the past six years. The agency was also made aware of 10 infant deaths as a result of these toxic products. Those deaths are still under investigation by the FDA.
Belladonna is an herb that is used as a sedative, to stop bronchial spasms and as a cold hay fever remedy. It is also used for Parkinson’s disease, colic, motion sickness and as a painkiller. Belladonna has chemicals that can block functions of the body’s nervous system. However, as evidenced in these cases, its effects can be unpredictable and lethal in young children.
