Huge Trader Joe’s Cashew Recall for Salmonella Contamination
If you’ve recently bought raw cashews from Trader Joe’s, you may need to check the label to see if they are part of a huge, nationwide recall. According to an MSNBC news report, this recall affects 31 states because there is a suspicion that the cashews might be contaminated with salmonella.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states the recall comes from the store’s supplier, California-based Heritage International. A routine lab test found the presence of salmonella is one lot of their Raw Cashew Pieces. The cashews are sold in 16-ounce, clear plastic bags.
So far, no illnesses have been reported from eating the cashews, but the recall is being conducted out of an abundance of caution, officials say. Customers with questions are asked to call Trader Joe’s at 626-599-3817 for more information about the recall.
The Dangers of Salmonella
The CDC estimates that more than 380 people die and 19,000 are hospitalized each year as a result of salmonella infections in the United States. Symptoms of salmonella include severe abdominal cramping, diarrhea and fever that begins about 12 to 72 hours after a person is exposed to the bacteria. A majority of people recover in four to seven days. But those affected may also suffer long-term health complications. Some strains of salmonella cannot even be treated with antibiotics.
What You Can Do

If you are experiencing food poisoning symptoms demand a lab test for pathogens. Isolate the suspect food and get it tested independently in the laboratory for the presence of pathogens.
