GM Recalls Half A Million Vehicles – Issues Stop-Sale Order
General Motors has recalled 524,384 more vehicles for defective latches and halted sales of two new pickups for airbag wiring issues.
According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, the stop-sale notice covers the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks that are just arriving at U.S. dealer lots.
GM said that the driver-side airbags in these vehicles were not properly wired during manufacturing. The automaker expects to resolve the problem and reopen dealer sales within days of providing a fix.
GM plans to give dealers instructions on how to reprogram the airbag’s sensing and diagnostic module to address the error.
GM Aims for Prompt Response
This recall and stop-sale notice underscore the automaker’s efforts to show customers and federal auto safety regulators that it is actively responding to safety issues before they escalate.
GM is facing a criminal investigation for failing to act promptly to complaints about ignition defects tied to at least 23 deaths.
The ignition issues led to operating failures in the cars’ airbags, power steering and brakes. About 524,400 vehicles are being recalled for faulty latches that could allow a hood to open unexpectedly.
These defects have been linked to three crashes and two injuries. Overall, GM has issued 71 recalls covering nearly 30 million vehicles in North America this year.
Dangerous and Defective Vehicles
Both of the defects described in this article are dangerous and have the potential to cause serious injury or even death.
While it is good that GM is making the effort to do the right thing, it is important to remember that they did not do that for the last decade.
Hundreds of injured victims and families of deceased victims are waiting in line to get rightful compensation from the automaker that has been denying for a decade that there was anything wrong with its vehicles.
In addition to its recall efforts, GM should also step up to the plate and compensate these victims and their families in a timely manner.
