General Motors Recalls 1 Million Vehicles for Steering Defects
General Motors has issued a vehicle defect recall for more than 1 million full-size pickup trucks and large SUVs that could suffer a steering malfunction leading to car crashes. According to a report on USA Today, GM said it had identified 30 crashes including two injuries as a result of these steering issues. So far, no deaths have been reported, the automaker says. The recall includes certain 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC 1500 pickups as well as 2015 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade SUVs. The Chevy Silverado accounts for 44 percent of the recalled vehicles.
The Problem with Recalled Vehicles
The recalled vehicles may experience a temporary loss of electric power steering followed by “a sudden return” especially during low-speed turning maneuvers. The loss and sudden return of EOS assist typically happens within a one-second period and is caused by an electrical/software issue. The auto defect could cause drivers to have difficulty steering the vehicle, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
The automaker said it launched a safety investigation on the matter on June 28. It decided on Aug. 30 to initiate a recall after analyzing customer complaints, conducting tests and completing engineering analyses. Those who own these vehicles will be notified and can get their repairs done at no cost. Dealers will conduct a software fix to rectify the defect.
Steering Defects and Liability Issues
The ability to steer your vehicle is critical. When you are unable to control the steering, the vehicle goes out of control, and it could be difficult even for experienced drivers to regain control of the vehicle. Steering defects could cause collisions that have the potential to result in major injuries and fatalities.
There are a number of symptoms that indicate steering problems or potential steering failure. One of the first signs you may see is difficulty turning the wheel. If you have power steering, this could mean that the system has the problem. If your steering wheel vibrates, it could mean that your wheel alignment is off or that there is an issue with the power steering. When your steering wheel is loose, that is also a sign of a defect or malfunction.
