Garbage Disposals Recalled for Flying Metal Pieces
If you have a garbage disposal in your kitchen, you might want to check to make sure if it’s part of a new recall over concerns that they might send metal pieces flying out of your sink. According to a news report on Consumerist.com, about 146,000 garbage disposals have been recalled involving popular brands like Kenmore, Moen and Frigidaire. Anaheim Manufacturing, the company that manufactured these garbage disposals for the big name brands announced the recall this week after making a determination that these products might pose serious injury hazards to consumers.
Risk for Serious Injuries
A notice posted with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) states that the metal component inside the garbage disposal can break off and come out of the disposal during use. So far, the company has received 22 reports of metal shrapnel getting shot out of the sink including three reports of the pieces hitting consumers. However, no injuries have been reported. CPSC says the recall covers garbage disposal systems from 10 different brands.
The recalled products were sold between December 2015 and March 2017 at major national retailers as well as online at prices ranging from $80 to $450. Those who have these products at home are asked to stop using them immediately and contact Anaheim Manufacturing at 1-800-628-0797 or online at anaheimmfg.com to request a free replacement disposal to be installed at no cost.
Injuries and Compensation
Garbage disposal accidents are not altogether uncommon. Sometimes, how these systems are used can determine the type of extent of the injuries caused. However, sometimes, when the systems themselves are defective, the injuries may be devastating. For example, when metal pieces suddenly shoot out of the sink when the garbage disposal is in operating, the consequences can be serious. Some of the potential injuries individuals may suffer include lacerations, eye injuries, facial injuries, etc.
If you or a loved one has been injured by these or other defective products, it is important that you contact an experienced product liability lawyer who can help you better understand your legal rights and options. You may be eligible to receive compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, pain and suffering and emotional distress. The best product defect law firms always offer free consultations and comprehensive case evaluations to injured victims and their families.
