Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX SUVs Recalled for Brake Issues
Ford has announced that it will issue a vehicle defect recall for 488,594 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX SUVs due to concerns that the brake lines could leak fluid and subsequently increase the risk of a crash. According to Consumer Reports, as the brake fluid level decreases, the driver may experience greater brake pedal travel and reduced brake performance.
Details of the Recall
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the flexible front brake jounce hoses can rupture allowing the brake fluid to leak out. Since hydraulic brake systems depend on fluid pressure to operate, this could lead to an unsafe decrease in stopping ability. The automaker is advising that if the brake fluid reservoir is depleted below a certain level, the brake fluid warning indicator light will illuminate.
Ford has said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition. The automaker is set to begin notifying consumers about this recall the week of Sept. 14. The recall includes 2015-2018 Ford Edge vehicles built at Oakville Assembly Plant from June 25, 2014, to Dec. 21, 2017 as well as 2016-18 Lincoln MKX vehicles built at the same plant from Nov. 11, 2014 to Dec. 21, 2017. When the recall begins next month, Ford dealers will replace the front brake jounce hoses with new hoses made with a revised braided material free of charge.
