The progressive radio show’s website reports that several years ago, J & J offered a woman $1.3 million to keep the link between talc and cancer quiet from the public.

Plaintiff Refused to Keep Quiet

Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins talks about the very first lawsuit filed against J & J by a woman named Diane Berg in 2009. At 49, Berg was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She had been using talcum powder made by Johnson & Johnson for most of her life for feminine hygiene needs. Four years later, Johnson & Johnson offered her $1.3 million to keep her quiet and not let this story get out. Berg declined that money and the case went to a jury trial.

Even though the jury gave her no money, they did find that J & J’s talcum powder products were linked to ovarian cancer. Berg said she wanted to take the case to trial because she wanted women to know the truth about the talcum powder they use. She said Johnson & Johnson knew how dangerous their products were, but they hid the facts from consumers. They did everything in their power, including offering Berg a million dollars to make sure that the truth about talcum powder remained suppressed.

Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer

Talc is a mineral that is structurally similar to asbestos, which is a known carcinogen. When women use talcum powder for feminine hygiene purposes, the talc fibers could travel to the ovaries causing inflammation and a heightened risk of ovarian cancer. Research linking talc to ovarian cancer has existed since the 1970s. A study in 2003 found a 33 percent increased risk of ovarian cancer from talcum powder use. In 2008, Harvard researchers conducted a study and linked the use of talcum powder with a 36 percent increased risk of ovarian cancer.
