Cybex Weight Lifting Equipment Recalled after Serious Spinal Cord Injuries Reported
Cybex has recalled about 15,000 of its Smith Press plate-loaded weight-lifting equipment after 27 reports of injuries including spinal fractures and paralysis. According to an alert issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the weight bar in these machines can fall posing serious injury hazards to the user. Consumers are asked to immediately stop using the weight lifting equipment and contact Cybex for instructions regarding how to receive a free repair for model 5341 or a credit or refund for model 5340. The company is contacting all known purchasers regarding this recall.
Details of the Recall
The recall involves Cybex Smith Press model 5340 manufactured and distributed from 1989 through 1993 and model 5341 made and distributed from 1993 to 2009. The models have a weight bar seated between two parallel vertical tracks on latch pins. The weight bar can be moved up and down to perform upper body and lower body exercises.
This equipment is primarily used in gyms and fitness facilities. The weight bar was sold with the Smith Press and the weights were sold separately. The model number is printed on the base of the frame of the equipment. Anyone with questions is asked to contact Cybex toll-free at 877-423-3253.
Spinal Cord Fractures
According to news reports, this defective equipment has caused spinal cord fractures that have resulted in paralysis.
