CVS Nasal Spray Recalled for Potential Bacterial Contamination

A CVS brand nasal spray is being voluntarily recalled because of potential bacterial contamination. According to a report on Livescience.com, the recall applies to Lot# 173089J of CVS Health 12-Hour Sinus Relief Nasal Mist, a nasal decongestant. The spray, manufactured by Florida-based Product Quest Manufacturing, was recalled after it was found that the product was contaminated with a bacterium called Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

How the Spray Affects Users

The symptoms of the bacterial infection depend on which part of the body becomes infected. If the bacteria get into the lungs, the person could develop pneumonia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The bacteria could also cause eye, skin, ear and blood infections. Those who are hospitalized or have a compromised immune system are most at risk for a Pseudomonas infection. In these groups of people, this infection could lead to severe illness or death.

Infections are treated with antibiotics even though they are becoming more difficult to treat as the bacteria become more resistant to the drugs, the CDC says. Repeated use of the nasal spray could potentially lead to the bacteria building up in the person’s body, which could cause the illness.

So far, the company has not received any reports of adverse events related to the recalled products.
