Chevrolet and Buick Sedans and GM SUVs Recalled for Fire Danger
General Motors is recalling 194,105 cars and SUVs to fix a faulty part that can cause the vehicles to lose power or even catch fire while still in motion. According to Consumer Reports, the majority of the recalled vehicles are 2018 and 2019 Chevy Cruze, 2018 Chevy Malibu, and 2018 and 2019 Buick Lacrosse vehicles. Some SUVs are also being recalled.
Details of the Recall
Documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that an oil leak may cause the vehicles included in this recall to lose propulsion while driving or catch fire. NHTSA has said that it doesn’t know of any car accidents or injuries related to this recall. Officials said the problem in the recalled vehicles has been caused by missing or loose bolts on a part called the accumulator. When the bolts are missing or loose, a transmission oil leak may occur.
If this happens, a vehicle may lose propulsion while in motion, or oil may leak and possibly catch fire in the presence of an ignition source. It’s part of the auto start-stop system, which shuts off the engine while the vehicle is idling to save fuel and to lower emissions. Because of a software issue at a supplier’s factory, some accumulators left the factory with bolts that were loose or missing. Testing conducted by GM and the supplier showed that the missing or loose bolts may lead to a transmission oil leak.
Accumulators made by the same supplier were installed on fewer than 200 Ford and Lincoln SUVs and vans as well. The supplier, Borg-Warner, has since updated its software so that the parts are manufactured properly. When the recall beings on Dec. 20, dealers will inspect the accumulators for missing or loose bolts and replace them if necessary, free of charge.
