Casey Anthony’s Father Injured in Rollover Accident, Family Says Toyota 4Runner Was Defective
The Daily Mail reports that 67-year-old George Anthony, the father of Casey Anthony, the Florida mom who was acquitted of murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee back in 2011, has been severely injured in a Florida car accident. According to the news report, George Anthony was driving his wife Cindy’s 1999 Toyota 4Runner Nov. 24 west on Interstate 4 in Daytona Beach when it went into the right shoulder. Florida Highway Patrol officials said Anthony then swerved left to get back on the road, but lost control. His car rolled over three times across three lanes of the highway.
Cindy Anthony has blamed the accident on the vehicle claiming one of its wheels came off. On her Twitter page, she asked followers if anyone had been hurt by their Toyota 4Runner’s wheel coming off. She said the left rear axle broke in her vehicle leaving her husband seriously injured. She also said she bought the vehicle brand new, with low miles and well maintained, and that she didn’t know of any recalls for this particular issue.
Role of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Coverage
In addition, she cautioned her Twitter followers to be aware of what their auto insurance policies cover. “Unless you take out special insurance coverage as a driver in a single car accident, if you are injured, you are not covered under your Personal Injury Protection or PIP. Florida no fault only pays $10,000. Very deceptive how they make you feel protected.” PIP is an extension of car insurance that covers medical expenses, and in many cases, lost wages.
So, if you have PIP and are injured in an accident, you can receive maximum benefits whether or not the accident was your fault. In addition to medical bills and lost wages, PIP insurance can cover expenses such as transportation to medical appointments. George Anthony’s accident report, however, stated Anthony might have lost control of his vehicle because of a possible medical issue. But, the report did not state what the medical issue was.
The Anthony family is not the first one to learn the importance of having PIP coverage after a serious injury car accident. While PIP coverage is mandatory in 13 states including Florida, it is optional in California. Apparently, the Anthonys only received $10,000 from his PIP coverage despite his serious injuries. Cindy Anthony has set up a GoFundMe account for her husband and has said that he will have a long road to recovery ahead.
