Boiled Eggs Sold at Trader Joe’s, Wal-Mart and Costco Recalled Over Listeria Concerns
A recall concerning hard-boiled eggs and egg salads linked to a deadly listeria outbreak has been expanded to include major retailers nationwide including Wal-Mart, Trader Joe’s, Kroger, Costco and ShopRite. According to a CBS news report, the expanded recall includes popular brands and organic fare such as Egglands Best, Pete & Gerry’s and Vital Farms. Earlier this week, Georgia processor, Almark expanded a recall to include all hard-boiled egg products from a facility in Gainesville.
Details of the Recall
Great American Deli recalled egg salad sandwiches sold at convenience stores and vending machines in several states as well. Bakkavor Foods initiated a recall involving egg products from Almark sold as Trader Joe’s Egg Salad and Trader Joe’s Old Fashioned Potato Salad. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention believes hard-boiled eggs produced by Almark are tainted with listeria and have sickened people in at least five states.
One person in Texas died and four others were hospitalized as a result of the infection. Three of the infections from the outbreak strain of the pathogen occurred in 2017 and four occurred this year. Officials believe this outbreak could become larger because the products in question were shipped to retailers nationwide under the brand names Almark, Eggs Select, Nick’s Peeled Pearls, Rainbow Farms and Sutherland’s Food Service. Affected products have a “best by” date that begins with a G, which means the product was made in the Gainesville facility. Officials are urging consumers to discard these products if they have them at home.
Listeria Infections
Listeria seriously affects young children, the elderly, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women. Those who develop a listeria infection may experience symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea. Symptoms may begin a few days after you’ve eaten the contaminated food. If the listeria infection spreads to your nervous system, you may also experience symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion or changes in alertness, loss of balance and convulsions. Pregnant women may experience stillbirths or miscarriages.
If you have developed a listeria infection as the result of a food product contaminated by the bacteria, make sure you isolate the leftover food so no one else in your household consumes it. Get medical attention, treatment and care for your illness as soon as possible, and follow the doctor’s orders for treatment and care.
If you are diagnosed with listeriosis, have the leftover food tested independently in a laboratory to check for the presence of pathogens. Report your illness to your local health care agency, which tends to track trends in food-borne illnesses. Contact an experienced food poisoning lawyer who can help you secure compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, pain and suffering and emotional distress.
