Bloody Pit Bull Attack in California Spurs Shooting
A Fremont police officer shot and killed a large pit bull after the dog attacked its owner and another woman at a local park. According to a CBS San Francisco news report, the incident occurred the evening of July 30 at Vallejo Mills Park. Police responded to a 911 call about a vicious dog attacking two women. Witnesses said the dogs were “chewing up” the victims.
Violent Dog Attack
When officers arrived at the scene, they found two women whose hands were covered in blood trying to control an extremely violent dog. Police said the dog was a pit bull weighing 70 to 80 pounds. The police report said the women had been trying to break up a fight between the pit bull and another dog when the pit bull turned on the owner.
One of the women had her fingers bitten off, officials said. Eventually, one officer managed to grab the dog around the neck with a snare pole, but the dog managed to slip away. The officer then shot and killed the dog because it showed extreme aggression, police said. Both women were taken to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Our thoughts and prayers are with both victims of this brutal dog attack. We wish them the very best for a quick and full recovery.
Dog Bite Law and Liability
Based on this news report, it appears that this attack occurred in a public place. The circumstances that led to this vicious attack are not known. However, California does have a “strict liability statute” when it comes to dog attacks. California’s Civil Code Section 3342 states: “The owner of any dog is liable for the damages suffered by any person who is bitten by the dog while in a public place or lawfully in a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner’s knowledge of such viciousness.”
Injured victims of dog attacks can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of cosmetic surgery, psychological therapy, pain and suffering and emotional distress. Injured victims would be well advised to contact an experienced California dog bite lawyer who will fight for their rights and help them secure maximum compensation for their injuries, damages and losses.
