Beef Frank Links Recalled for Metal Contamination
Vienna Beef, a company that is known for its Chicago-style hot dogs, has issued a product defect recall for about 2,030 pounds of beef frank links because they may be contaminated with metal fragments. According to a CBS News report, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is saying that the possibly tainted franks might contain metal fragments. The products were manufactured on May 2 and shipped to retailers in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service urged consumers not to eat the recalled products, but discard them or return them to the point of purchase.
So far, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions as a result of consuming these recalled hot dogs, but anyone concerned about an injury or illness is urged to contact their healthcare providers. The Vienna Beef products being recalled bear the establishment number “EST. 1” inside the USDA inspection mark. Metal is among unintended materials that have made their way into what people eat along with plastic and parasites, prompting manufacturers to recall a variety of foods from meats and ready-made meals to produce.
Foreign Material Contamination
There have been so many recent food recalls involving foreign material contamination that the USDA, earlier this year, issued a new set of guidelines or best practices for food producers to help prevent this type of contamination. Between 2016 and 2018, possible contamination of foreign material was responsible for more than 18 percent of recalls managed by USDA. In the two years prior, in 2014 and 2015, that number was only at 7 percent.
Recently, Perdue Farms, Tyson Foods and Pilgrim’s Pride recalled more than 100,000 pounds of chicken nuggets combined. Tyson and Pilgrim’s Pride nuggets were tainted with rubber while Perdue said it used incorrect labeling on its products. Also, recently, Washington Beef recalled about 30,000 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with materials such as hard plastic and metal.
If You Have Been Affected
Products tainted with foreign objects such as plastic, rubber and glass, needless to say, have the potential to cause significant injuries and illnesses. Food producers have a responsibility to ensure proper maintenance of their machines and good quality control so their products are clean and safe for consumers. If you or a loved one has been affected by a contaminated food product, an experienced food poisoning lawyer can help you seek compensation for your losses. You may be able to recover damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization and pain and suffering.
