A Recorded Example of Sudden Unintended Acceleration – ’08 Toyota Tundra
Bisnar Chase received a video recently from Dean Ngo in Plymouth, Minnesota. The video showed Ngo, the driver, parked on the side of the road, brakeing, while the engine was revving and the tires were squealing. Ngo was unable to turn the engine off even after the key in the ignition was turned off. When the car was switched from drive to neutral, it appears that the brake override that overrides the gas pedal when both are pressed at the same time is turned off, and the engine revs as if the accelerator pedal is pressed all the way down. Finally the car shuts off on its own, after the ignition has been turned off for more than a minute.
This is an example of how Sudden Unintended Acceleration (SUA) can be extremely dangerous. From the 1970s to the late 2000’s, sudden unintended acceleration has been blamed primarily on driver error, and from 2007, on pedal entrapment in floor mats and trim panels. Several studies have been performed that show no evidence that there is an electronic defect in Toyota vehicles. However, evidence from the Barr Group and from an internal translator for Toyota show that defects in the Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) can be reproduced and that Toyota may have known about these defects. This video from Dean Ngo lends even more evidence to the fact that Toyota cars may have dangerous defects in the ETCS, and that there is no evidence to show that this incident of sudden acceleration had anything to do with driver error or floor mat entrapment, which the dealership also ruled out.
