28 Injured In Metrolink Train Accident In Oxnard

More than two dozen people were injured, four critically, in a MetrolinkAccording to an NBC news report, the Metrolink train was on the Ventura County Line tracks between Camarillo and Oxnard, about 70 miles west of Los Angeles, when it collided with a truck on the tracks and derailed.
Officials say the conductor of the Los Angeles-bound train used its emergency-braking system after noticing the truck and trailer on the tracks near 5th Street and Rice Avenue.

Severe Injuries and Ongoing Investigation
Although it wasn’t enough to prevent the fiery collision, officials say it might have prevented more serious injuries or fatalities. Witnesses and those who rushed to help victims said they several injured, some seriously. The crash sent five cars off the track and toppled three on their sides.
Four victims are in critical condition with head injuries and rib and spine fractures. The extent of injuries ranged from severe head trauma and extremity trauma to neck and back injuries – the types of injuries people may suffer when they are tossed around, officials said.
The truck driver tried to flee the scene, but was detained by police. Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident.
Los Angeles Area Metrolink Crashes
This crash is one of three major accidents involving Metrolink trains in the past decade. In 2008, a freight train and a Metrolink train collided head-on in Chatsworth killing 25 people and injuring more than 100 others.
In that case the train had gone through a red signal before entering the single-track section. In January 2005, 11 people were killed when an abandoned truck on the rail line near Glendale caused a Metrolink train to derail and hit other trains on either side of the track.
