2018 GMC Terrain SUVs Recalled for Defective Airbags
GMC says it is issuing an auto defect recall for more than 88,000 select Terrain SUVs from the 2018 model year because defective software can keep airbags from deploying in the event of a crash. According to Consumer Reports, the problem could occur if the software module fails. GMC says there have been no reports of accidents, injuries or fatalities relating to this issue. Dealers will provide loaner vehicles to those owners whose vehicles are involved as long as the vehicle is still under warranty.
Details of the Recall
The vehicles involved in this recall are all GMC Terrain SUVs from the model year 2018 manufactured from March 14, 2017 through May 22, 2018. The problem is that the airbag sensors in these vehicles might not power down properly when the vehicle is shut down and might not operate properly hen the vehicle is restarted. If this occurs, the vehicle’s airbags might not deploy in a crash.
When a vehicle has this issue, the airbag warning lamp will become illuminated and the driver information center will display a “service restraint system” message, and warning chimes will sound. When the recall begins, GMC dealers will perform a software update free of charge to owners. Vehicle owners with questions may call GMC customer service at 800-462-8782. If you are not sure if your vehicle is involved, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website and type in your 17-digit vehicle identification number to see if your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.
The Problem with Faulty Airbags
Airbags are among the most important safety features in our vehicles. Newer vehicles have both front and side airbags to help cushion vehicle occupants and protect them from blunt force injuries during auto accidents. However, when an airbag fails to deploy, occupants of a vehicle may suffer major if not catastrophic or life threatening injuries. We count on airbags to provide us with that extra layer of protection in the event of a crash.
If you or a loved one has been injured because of a defective airbag, seatbelt or a safety feature that fails to work as intended, you may be able to file a product defect lawsuit against the vehicle manufacturer and/or the maker of the defective part. You may be able to seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, and pain and suffering. If you have lost a loved one as the result of an airbag defect, you may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation. An experienced auto defect lawyer will be able to provide you with more information about your legal rights and options.
