Debilitating Zimmer Nexgen Results

Until recently, complaints that Zimmer had created a defective knee replacement device were treated with little respect and were considered to be unfounded allegations, but the tides are starting to turn. Doctors across the country have come forward to help spur the FDA into taking action against these negligent pharmaceutical companies for their dangerous defective products, which starts with a full recall.

2010 reports imply that a substantial number of patients that have utilized the Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex Porous Femoral component to be used in their knee replacement surgery have had horrible results, many having to undergo painful and debilitating revision surgeries.

As evidence continues to surface, and NexGen continues to keep quiet, patients and families are left in pieces wondering how these companies were able to place their company's profits over consumer safety.

Zimmer NexGen Recall Exposes Life-Threatening Defects

Data was released in March of 2010 at an American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons conference which suggested that the Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex Knee Replacement's rate of failure is close to nine percent, which is substantially higher than what would be considered normal. Dr. Richard Berger, the study's lead author, admitted that this rate of failure for these types of devices is "unacceptably high."

Dr. Richard Berger's research found that a number of patients experienced radiographic-loosening from their knee implants and that their studies suggest that this was not due to the implanting doctor's error, but to the device's multiple manufacturing defects.

Zimmer Knee Replacement Side Effects

Those who have been affected by the defective Zimmer knee replacement experience an array of very painful side effects. Many of those who were implanted with one of these product defects have to undergo a knee replacement revision surgery to correct the complications resulting from the original implant. In most cases, the device must be replaced due to loosening of the implant. The following are symptoms associated with patients who experience a loose Zimmer Nexgen Knee Replacement.

  • Knee pain and swelling
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Difficulty supporting weight
  • Limping
  • Knee stiffness

Defective Zimmer NexGen Recall Gets Little Publicity

Although over 100 class 2 recalls have been issued for these product defects, some feel that Zimmer has been able to escape the spotlight, keeping their good name despite the fact that they released a device that has caused countless injuries. No press releases were issued nor did the FDA issue any alerts to help inform and protect those who might be at risk.

As is usual for most products liability cases, injuries resulting from these defective devices could have easily been avoided. Having worked with victims of product defects for over 35 years, it never fails to baffle us as to how and why products with such destructive capabilities are able to reach consumers, considering that we have agencies put in place to protect us from these forms of manufacturer negligence. The malfunctions found in these replacement devices should not have been discovered years later, they should have been discovered during testing.
