Interstate Route 210 Freeway Accident Attorneys

The Foothill Freeway consists of Interstate 210 and State Route 210. The I-210 gets its name from Foothill Boulevard, which runs parallel to the freeway. This busy freeway runs from the I-5 near San Fernando all the way east to the I-10 in Redlands. Interstate 210 is an important part of the Los Angeles County freeway network. It varies from three to six lanes including carpool lanes. Its western terminus is at the junction with the I-5 near the Sylmar district of Los Angeles. It then travels diagonally southeast through the San Fernando Valley and the Crescenta Valley. Once the Foothill Freeway leaves Los Angeles, it turns south towards a junction with State Route 134 in Pasadena. It then becomes an east-west freeway until it connects to the I-10 in Redlands in San Bernardino County.

A Busy Freeway

Hundreds of thousands of motorists travel on Interstate Route 210 every day. According to Interstate-guide.com, the average daily traffic is as low as 73,000 near the I-5 interchange and as high as 314,000 at its busiest point at the interchange of Interstate 710 south and California 134 west in Pasadena. A review of the annual average daily traffic numbers show that the busiest parts of the 210 Freeway are in Pasadena east of the I-710. The number of daily travelers drops back down below 200,000 once the 210 is east of Azusa.

Common Accident Causes

With over 300,000 daily travelers, there are ample opportunities for injury accidents to occur along the Foothill Freeway. Common causes of Interstate 210 accidents include:

  • Speeding drivers: Motorists who exceed the speed limit on busy highways are the cause of some of the most devastating accidents. It is important that motorists on the I-210 not only obey the posted speed limit, but also adjust their speed for the roadway and traffic conditions.
  • Drunk drivers: Motorists who choose to get behind the wheel after having a few drinks can be extremely dangerous. Alcohol decreases your reaction time and affects your ability to make safe driving decisions. Drivers who are under the influence are more likely to weave through traffic, drift from their lane and fail to adjust to changes on the roadway.
  • Congestion: I-210 is an important and busy roadway. It only takes one traffic stop by a police officer, one fender bender or one small roadway construction crew for traffic to come to a halt. Whenever there are slowed motorists, there is the potential for devastating rear-end collisions to occur.
  • Failure to maintain lane: Motorists who let their vehicles drift, or who swerve from one lane to the next, can cause serious injury accidents on the freeway. Drivers who are drifting from their lane should be avoided.
  • Failure to yield to motorcyclists: California law allows lane-splitting on the I-210 if the motorcyclist does it safely. It is common for drivers to fail to look for motorcycle riders before changing lanes. All motorcyclists should ride defensively to avoid these types of devastating incidents.
