Salads and Sandwiches Sold at Target Nationwide Recalled for Listeria Contamination
Target and the Fresh Market are recalling some of their salads and sandwiches because of a potential listeria contamination. According to a KTLA news report, Elevation Foods say containers of Archer Farms-branded egg salad, Fresket brand egg salad, tuna salad and Thai lobster salad, and Archer Farms brand deviled egg sandwiches made on June 18, have all been included in this recall. The Fresh Market said the Thai Lobster Salad sold by the pound in the chain’s self-serve seafood salad bar and pre-packaged containers are part of this recall as well.
Details of the Recall
The company issued a statement saying 1,087 cases of the products were manufactured at Elevation Foods’ Knoxville facility and shipped to retailer warehouses across the country. The company says consumers should check the use-by date and lot number printed on the side of the containers or lids to see if they have a potentially contaminated product. So far, no illnesses have been reported.
Officials at Elevation Foods said they discovered the issue after getting a positive test result for three containers of affected egg salad that were sampled and tested by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The company says it is working to determine the exact source of the listeria bacteria. Consumers who have these products at home are urged to return them to the point of purchase for a full refund.
Understanding the Dangers of Listeria
Listeriosis is a serious infection caused by bacteria. People usually become ill with listeriosis after they consume food tainted by the bacteria. The infection primarily affects pregnant women, newborn children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis could seriously affect fetuses or newborn babies and has the potential to result in miscarriages or stillbirth. Adults 65 years or older and those with weakened immune systems could develop severe infections of the bloodstream or brain. Listeria infections could also affect other parts of the body including bones, joints, chest and abdomen.
If you or a loved one has contracted listeriosis as a result of consuming contaminated food, you may be able to file a food poisoning lawsuit against the manufacturer, food processor and/or the retailer who sold the tainted products. You may be able to seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost income, cost of diagnosis, treatment, pain and suffering and emotional distress. An experienced California food poisoning lawyer will be able to advise you regarding your legal rights and options.
