Salmonella Effects and Symptoms
CDC estimates that salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations and 450 deaths in the United States every year. Food is the source of about one million of these illnesses. A vast majority of those infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment. However, in some people, the diarrhea might be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized.
If you or a loved one has been sickened by these or other food products or any other type of defective or contaminated food products, it is important that you get prompt medical attention, treatment and care for your illness. Report your illness to your local healthcare agency, which tracks these types of food-borne illnesses and related outbreaks.
