Hyundai Sonata Vehicles Recalled for Fuel Leaks and Risk of Fires
Hyundai is recalling about 207,000 Sonata sedans from the 2013-2014 model years over concerns of a potential fuel leak and fire risk. According to Consumer Reports, a fuel line may develop a small crack over time because of heat in the engine compartment. Documents filed by the automaker with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that if the line leaks gasoline, there is a risk of fire. Hyundai says drivers may be able to smell fuel if there is a leak.
Details of the Recall
The documents specifically state that the hose in these vehicles that connects the low-pressure fuel pump to the direct-injection fuel pump may crack over time due to heat generated within the engine compartment. A damaged fuel line could allow gasoline to leak and thereby cause an engine compartment fire.
The Kia Optima was recalled last month for a similar defect prompting Hyundai to take action as well. The automaker says it has not received reports of smoking, melting or fires relating to this auto defect. Hyundai is still investigating the causes and evaluating a fix. Dealerships and owners will be notified of this recall in April and the fix, when it becomes available will be done at no charge to consumers.
