According to The New York Times, these recalls bring GM’s total for the year to 60 recalls, covering about 29 million vehicles worldwide.
GM is recalling more than 822,000 cars globally for a variety of flaws including problems with seats, airbags and turn signals, parts that may not have been welded together properly and power steering loss.
The ignition defects have been linked to 16 deaths and dozens of injuries so far.
As part of the recent recalls, GM has recalled more than 65,000 of its 2014 Chevrolet Impala vehicles for loss of power steering. This defect has been tied to one crash, but no injuries.
Also, more than 475,000 cars, including models of the Chevy Camaro and Equinox; GMC Terrain; Buick Regal and LaCrosse; and the Cadillac SRX, have been recalled because of a defect that allows the front and passenger seats to move up and down freely due to a loose bolt.
GM is aware of one crash and three injuries caused by this auto defect.
GM’s Problems This Year
More than half of the company’s recalled cars this year have had problems relating to their ignitions, similar to the defect that led to the recall of 2.6 million Chevy Cobalts Saturn Ions and smaller cars.
The company did not disclose these defects it knew about to regulators and the public for more than a decade. The ignition defects have been linked to 16 deaths and dozens of injuries. GM is under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
In addition, GM’s actions or its lack of action relating to the ignition defect issue is the subject of a criminal probe by the Department of Justice.
Auto Product Liability Issues
If you own one of these recalled vehicles, it is critical that you take your car to the dealership and get the necessary repairs made. If your vehicle is part of a safety recall, the manufacturer pays to make the repairs.
If you or a loved one has been injured due to a defective or recalled vehicle, please preserve the vehicle in its current condition so that an expert can examine it thoroughly for any evidence of defects or malfunctions.
