Ford Recalls 200,000 Vehicles For Crash Risks
Ford Motor Company has said that it is issuing five new recall campaigns covering more than 200,000 vehicles in North America including one that has been linked to a crash and some for defective airbags and fire hazards.
According to a report in The Detroit News, Ford is recalling 38,645 2005-2011 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car vehicles for possible improper repair in a prior recall for an issue with the steering shaft.
This improper repair could cause drivers of these vehicles to lose control of the steering. When this recall begins, Ford will inspect and repair the upper intermediate steering shaft.
Ford is aware of one accident relating to this defect.
Variety of Auto Defects
Ford is also recalling 135,000 2014 Ford Flex and F-150 vehicles for a passenger seat sensing issue that could result in the airbag failing to deploy in certain frontal crashes.
Dealers will widen the gap between the manual seat frame and seat track assembly and then calibrate the seat occupant classification system.
The automaker is also recalling 27,600 2014 Transit Connect vehicles for a fuel and vapor line routing issue. This defect could cause a fire. In addition, Ford is recalling about 950 F-150 pickup trucks for a brake pedal issue.
Dangerous Vehicles on Our Roadway
Ford has recalled these vehicles for a variety of defects. The defect that has been linked to one crash is the one that Ford was supposed to have fixed. This year has been a record for auto safety recalls.
The question however is: How many of the vehicles that have been recalled are getting fixed and how many are getting fixed “properly?”
We found out last week with the Takata airbag recall that the manufacturer cannot make enough airbags to ensure that all recalled vehicles have the newer, safer airbags that won’t explode and send shrapnel flying into the passenger compartment.
This also makes matters complicated for those who want to buy vehicles online or from used car dealers. In this particular recall climate, it is critical that consumers do their research before buying new or used vehicles.
Make sure the vehicle has not been recalled. If it has been recalled, make sure the necessary repairs have been made.
