Cream and Gel Used for Tattoos and Hemorrhoids Recalled for Contamination

Topical creams and gels that are applied to take the pain out of tattoos, hemorrhoids and some of the itching out of bedsores, have been recalled after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that it found microbial contamination and too much lidocaine in the products. According to a report in the Miami Herald, the company, Ridge Properties has pulled several lots of the products including those under the Pre-TAT, Soothing Sore Relief and Superior brand names.

Details of the Recall

Pre-TAT and Superior are used as numbing agents before tattoos. Soothing Sore Relief is used for pain and itching associated with hemorrhoids and bedsores. All these creams and gels have 4 percent lidocaine. But, the FDA says it has found a higher concentration in addition to microbial contamination. The recall notice states the risks from a contaminated pre-tattoo product are greater because the skin is being traumatized immediately after application.

Tattooing is also known to have infectious complications. Further use of lidocaine greater than the label claim may increase the risk of methemoglobinemia, a blood disorder in which an abnormal amount of methemoglobin is produced. This could affect the body’s oxygen supply. The recalled products were all sold over the counter via amazon.com, walmart.com, ebay.com, tatbalm.net and naturallyhl.com.
