Big Lots Recalls Fire Pit Tables That Could Ignite
Big Lots is recalling nearly 11,000 fire pit tables with an incorrectly installed burner kit hose, a component that could potentially melt and catch fire. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the retail giant is recalling 10,900 of Sunjoy Inds, Oakmont LP fire put tables sold nationwide.
Recall Details
The natural tile, square tables are about 38 inches wide, 38 inches deep and 25.6 inches high. They have a powder-coated steel frame with an all-weather wicker base that hides a 20-pound liquid propane tank. The tanks are ignited with a push-button and have an adjustable flame with a steel burner cover.
So far, the manufacturer has received 17 reports of fire pit tables with incorrectly installed hoses that have problems. Twelve of the tables have caught fire. There have been four reports of property damage and one report of a user being burned on his hand. The CPSC is urging consumers to stop using these recalled units right away and to contact Sunjoy to get a free replacement burner kit and installation instructions. - Before striking a match, don’t place a pit closer than 10 feet from anything flammable.
- Always burn dry, seasoned wood that was cut at least six months earlier. To keep the sparks from flying, make sure the logs are no longer than three-quarters of the pit’s diameter. While using gas pits, make sure all vents are clear to avoid smoky flare-ups.
- Never use lighter fluid, gas or kerosene to light a fire.
- You can put out a fire or a flare-up with a garden hose. Keep one close by with the water turned on and the nozzle set to spray so you can use it right away if necessary. A fire extinguisher can also do the job.
