Baby Carriers Recalled for Potential Injury Hazards
Infantino is recalling about 14,000 of its baby carriers because its buckle can break and the child could fall out. According to a news report, the items were sold at Target and Amazon.com from Nov. 15 to Dec. 20. The carriers were made in China. So far, no injuries have been reported. The recalled models include the Go Forward 4-in-1 Evolved Ergonomic Carrier (lot codes 2018 0619 and 2018 0719), the Flip Front2back Carrier (lot code 2018 0719) and the Up Close Newborn Carrier (lot code 2018 0719).
The front-facing infant carriers are made of cotton with a front padded pouch. The carriers have a black body and black straps or a gray body and black straps, according to descriptions of the products posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The code is sewn into the inside of the carrier. Other similar products were not affected by this recall. Injuries Caused by Nursery Products
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in 2016, there were about 59,000 emergency department-treated injuries associated with nursery products among children under 5 years of age. High chairs, cribs, strollers and infant carriers were associated with 66% percent of the total estimated injuries. Falls were the leading cause of injury and the head followed by the face were the body parts injured most frequently.
A diagnosis of internal organ injury, contusion or laceration was associated with a majority of injuries. CPSC also reports of 320 deaths during a three-year period from 2014 to 2016 with an annual average of 107 deaths associated with the use of nursery products among children younger than age 5. Cribs/mattresses, playpens/play yards, bassinets/cradles, infant carriers, and portable baby swings were associated with 84percentof the fatalities reported.
