White Castle’s Frozen Sliders Recalled for Possible Listeria Contamination
As we head into the holiday season, food manufacturers’ listeria woes continue. The latest is White Castle, the company known for its hamburgers, which is recalling a limited number of its frozen sandwich products because of listeria concerns. According to a Business Insider news report, the voluntary recall includes six-pack cheeseburgers, hamburgers, jalapeno cheeseburgers, and 16-pack hamburgers and cheeseburgers with expiration dates between Aug. 4 and Aug.17
The retailers who sell White Castle frozen food products include Target, 7-Eleven, Aldi, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Kroger, Rite-Aid, Sam’s Club, CVS, Wal-Mart and other grocery stores. The products were sold in several states including California. So far, no illnesses have been reported.
Details of the Recall
The recall is limited only to the frozen packaged items, which are sold in grocery stores and other retail locations. White Castle’s fast food stores are not affected by this recall. A third-party lab conducting a recent quality assurance test of White Castle products from one facility found that a sample of its frozen sandwich products indicated the possible presence of listeria monocytogenes. All production was halted and all affected production runs were destroyed after the investigation.
Public health officials are urging those who bought the recalled sandwiches to dispose of them or return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. The recall affects about 72,000 packages. White Castle issued a statement saying its retail partners acted swiftly to remove the recalled products from their shelves and that they are working closely with Food and Drug Administration officials to make sure all future production meets federal safety standards.
If You Have Been Affected
Listeria infections are caused by consuming food that is contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, a type of bacteria. These serious and sometimes fatal infections most often affect those with weakened immune systems, children, the elderly and particularly, pregnant women, who could suffer miscarriages if they become infected. Listeria contamination can cause health problems such as fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
If you or a loved one has been affected by food that has been contaminated with listeria, it would be in your best interest to get prompt medical attention. Report your illness to your local healthcare agency and contact an experienced California food poisoning lawyer who can help you secure maximum compensation for your losses and hold the negligent parties accountable.
