Two Varieties of Bauers Candies Recalled for Hepatitis A Contamination
With just over a month to Valentine’s Day, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is issuing a product defect recall for Bauer’s Candies sold on QVC and online because it could be contaminated with Hepatitis A. According to a WTOP news report, the agency is warning consumers not to eat any Bauer’s Candies Chocolate or Caramel Modjeskas purchased after Nov. 14. These are individually wrapped marshmallow candies dipped in chocolate or caramel.
A worker in the company’s Kentucky facility tested positive for hepatitis A. The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have not received any reports of hepatitis A related to the consumption of the candies. The FDA is working with Bauer’s Candies on a voluntary recall of the affected products. If you have eaten the recalled candies it might be in your best interest to consult your doctor.
Dangers of Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection that is caused by the hepatitis A virus. The virus is one of several types that causes inflammation and affects your liver’s ability to function properly. You are most likely to get hepatitis A from contaminated food or water or from close contact with a person or object that is infected. Mild cases of hepatitis A do not require treatment.
However, serious cases can lead to permanent liver damage. Hepatitis A is typically spread when a person ingests fecal matter from an infected person, even if taken in microscopic amounts. It could take anywhere between 15 and 50 days after exposure for an infected person to show symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine and pale stool.
If You Have Been Affected
Food manufacturers have the responsibility to make products that are safe for consumers. They are particularly required to ensure sick employees don’t show up to work and that all employees wash their hands after using the restroom and returning to the food processing or food preparation site.
If you or a loved one has been sickened because of negligent food production or food processing, you may be able to file a food poisoning lawsuit against the at-fault parties seeking compensation for the damages and losses you have suffered. Victims in such cases can seek compensation for medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, pain and suffering and emotional distress. An experienced California food poisoning lawyer will be able to advise you regarding your legal rights and options.
