Toyota Expands Fuel Pump Recall to 1.5 Million Newer Vehicles
Toyota is expanding the scope of the fuel pump recall it initiated earlier this year with an additional 1.5 million newer Toyota and Lexus vehicles. According to a report on Car and Driver, this brings the total number of vehicles recalled since January to 2.7 million, representing nearly every model made by Toyota and Lexus.
Details of the Recall
The problem with these vehicles is a defective fuel pump made by supplier Denso and installed on certain models during certain time frames. The fuel pumps contain impellers of low density that supply pressure to the fuel injection system. The faulty impellers can then crack and eventually degrade the fuel pump. Owners of the affected vehicles may notice a check engine light or other illuminated indicators.
When this happens, the engine may not run smoothly or stall at low speed. In some circumstances, the vehicles could also stall at higher speeds. When a vehicle stalls at higher speeds, the risk of a crash increases significantly. The first recall for the impeller was issued in mid-January for about 700,000 vehicles.
In March, it doubled to cover 1.4 million vehicles. Toyota and Lexus issued a stop-sale order to dealers for these vehicles. Owners of the vehicles affected by the most recent recall will be notified by Dec. 23. Dealers will repair the vehicles at no cost to consumers.
