Tijuana Beauty Queen Killed in Fiery Lamborghini Crash in San Diego
Stephanie Rivera Camarena, 26, died after she was ejected in a San Diego car accident the night of November 5, 2017. According to a news report in the Daily Mail, Camarena was a passenger in a Lamborghini driven by millionaire Michael Llamas. Police say Llamas, the founder of a hemp products empire, was two weeks away from being sentenced in federal court for his role in a Ponzi scheme for swindling victims of more than $10 million. Llamas was also killed in the crash.
Police say Llamas was driving over 100 mph in the sports car when he lost control and crashed into a palm tree on Harbor Drive. Camarena, a resident of Mexico, was described as a charismatic woman who had championed a number of causes over the years. She was crowned Miss Baja California State in 2016. Officials have not yet determined if alcohol or drugs played a part in the deadly accident.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who knew and loved Stephanie Camarena. We offer our deepest condolences to her family members.
Excessive Speed Kills
This crash is reminiscent of the one that killed “Fast & Furious” star Paul Walker. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding endangers everyone on the road. In 2015 alone, speeding killed 9,557 people. Speeding endangers not only the life of the person who is driving at an excessive rate of speed, but their passengers and others on the roadway.
In 2015, speeding was a contributing factor in 27 percent of all fatal crashes. Often, alcohol is also a factor in crashes involving excessive speed. In 2013, almost three in four (74 percent) of speeding drivers involved in fatal crashes between midnight and 3 a.m. were alcohol-impaired compared to 43 percent of non-speeding drivers.
Liability Issues
If you or a loved one has been injured by a speeding driver, or if you are a passenger in a vehicle driven by a speeding driver, please remember that you have rights. Injured victims can seek compensation by filing a claim against the at-fault driver and families of the deceased victim can seek compensation by filing a wrongful death claim. If the at-fault driver is also killed in the crash, the victim’s family may be able to seek compensation by filing a claim against his or her estate.
In some cases where vehicle defects or vehicle design defects are involved, victims or their families may have a product liability claim against the automaker and/or a defective parts manufacturer. An experienced San Diego personal injury lawyer will be able to provide victims and their families with more information about pursuing their legal rights.
