Thousands of Pounds of Recalled Beef “Not Fit for Human Consumption”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued a massive recall of about 24,428 pounds of raw beef products manufactured by Chino-based American Beef Packers, Inc. According to news reports, the USDA has deemed nearly 12 tons of raw meat “unfit for human consumption.” In order to be safe for human consumption under the law, all animal products must be inspected by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) for potential disease and contamination.

Details of the Recall

In this particular case, FSIS investigators found and retained a potentially contaminated sample for further analysis. The possibly contaminated carcass was previously released in error and further process into raw intact and non-intact beef products, which were then distributed, officials said. The potentially dangerous beef products were produced and packaged on Aug. 31, 2019, and bear the establishment number “EST. 34741” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The items were shipped to federal establishments in California and Oregon.

The affected beef products include several bulk-pack combo bins containing cuts of boneless beef, rib eye, sirloins and tenderloin. Food safety officials are worried that some of these products may still remain in shoppers’ refrigerators or freezers. If you’ve bought any of these meat products, do not consume them. Discard them or return them to the store where you purchased them right away. So far, there have been no reports of illnesses or deaths linked to these recalled beef products.
