Study Says These Are the Most Dangerous Songs to Listen to While Driving
Is there such a thing as a safe or dangerous song when you’re driving? According to a report on Dailyitem.com, a new study released by Chinese researchers suggests that Green Day’s “American Idiot” is the most dangerous song to listen to when you’re driving. The safest song? That honor goes to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.”
What the Study Found
Researchers at the South China University of Technology reached that conclusion saying that songs with 120 beats per minute or higher and more likely to make you drive faster and thus risk dangerous maneuvers. Researchers determined “American Idiot” was the most dangerous song that was tested because of its tempo. At 189 beats per minute, it was the fastest song that was tested. Other tracks considered to be safer were as slow at 80 beats per minute.
The second and third most dangerous songs tested were “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus and the Killers’ “Mr. Brightside.” Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under the Bridge” and Drake’s “God’s Plan” were the second and third safest songs respectively, the study said. Researchers used 20 drivers and 60 driving simulation tests.
The study looked at the link between in-vehicle music listening, physiological and psychological response and driving performance. It also measured perceived mental workload, standard derivation of speed and frequency of lane crossing. The study found that in most cases, rock music caused drivers to switch lanes more frequently while also increasing their heart rate. In all cases, rock music caused the drivers to increase their speed.
