Sauer Brands Recalls Herbs and Spices for Possible Salmonella Contamination
Sauer Brands has recalled 29 Spice Hunter herb and spice products because they could pose a risk of salmonella. According to Consumer Reports, Sauer said notification of possible salmonella contamination from its supplier of organic parsley is what triggered the recall. In addition to organic parsley, the company also recalled other spices and spice blends including Herbs de Provence, Cilantro, Saigon Organic Cinnamon, Pumpkin Pie Spice and Everything Bagel Crunch.
All of these products were produced in the same facilities and on the same days as the parsley products. So far no illnesses have been reported. The recalled products were sold at retail stores in more than 30 states including California. All of the products had a “best by” date of August or September 2022. Consumers who have these products at home are asked to return them to the point of purchase for a full refund. For more information, contact Sauer Brands, Inc. at 800-444-3061.
Salmonella Infections
While raw meat and poultry pose a higher risk of bacterial infections, herbs and spices are not as well known as a vehicle for such outbreaks. However, they have played a role in a few outbreaks. Although herbs and spices are dried and used only in small amounts, salmonella can live in dried products. Also, it doesn’t take much of the pathogen to cause an illness.
Some of the common symptoms of a salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Sometimes, the symptoms can be so severe that individuals may require hospitalization. Symptoms can manifest from six hours to six days after exposure. If you are experiencing severe symptoms such as dehydration, dizziness or urinary problems, you should seek medical attention right away.
If You Have Been Affected
If you or a loved one has been sickened by contaminated food, it’s a good idea to save the purchase receipts for the products that you suspect caused your illness. If you still have some of the product remaining, isolate it so no one else in your household consumes it. Then, have it independently tested in a laboratory for the presence of pathogens.
If you are experiencing symptoms, make sure you get prompt medical attention, treatment and care. Affected victims may also be able to file a lawsuit against the manufacturer, retailer and other parties seeking compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, pain and suffering and emotional distress. An experienced food poisoning lawyer will be able to advise you regarding your legal rights and options.
